Anton Reiser: A Psychological Novel (Penguin Classics)
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (October, 1997)
Average review score:

A note on editions. The 1977 (or 1978) Hyperion edition is a reprint of P. E. Mattheson's 1926 edition. There have been two recent translations, one by John R. Russell (1996) and the other by Ritchie Robertson (1997). I cannot speak authoritatively about either translation, having not examined them in detail, but I can tell you that Robertson's includes the 'Gedankenstriche' (long dashes) that Moritz used, rather than converting them into more modern punctuation. This and the price would lead me to order Robertson's paperback edition.

An appetite for life : the education of a young diarist, 1924-1927
Published in Unknown Binding by Macmillan of Canada ()
Average review score:

Highly RecommendCharles Ritchie's An Appetite for Life is a treat. The book is in diary form from 1924-27, beginning in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The book is an honest, refreshing story of a young man's torments and appeals. The second part of the book is when the author himself goes to Oxford, England.
The book is fascinating. Mr. Ritchie paints a picture that the discerning reader will appreciate. Here is an excerpt of his log for May 29, 1924 where he is reflecting a conversation with Tony, a gentleman from England:
"He is much more experienced that I am. Of course he is four years older. He has seen a lot more of the world. Some of the things that he told me about sexual practices between men and women and also between men and men were a complete revelation to me. I never could have imagined them."
I highly recommend this wonderful book.

The Bears We Know
Published in Paperback by Firefly Books (J) (January, 1991)
Average review score:

Some things you just knowThis is a delightful little book that can be slipped into a card. The fun descriptions and charming pictures depict the daily activities of a group of bears who live down the street. Not that the children talking about them have ever actually SEEN the bears. Trust me, when everyone reads this book, they want to be a bear!

Biggest Glass Palace in the World
Published in Paperback by Ellipsis London Pr Ltd (September, 1999)
Average review score:

This is a cool LITTLE bookThis is a very elegant little book (4.5 inches square) about a very interesting, cutting edge glass structure. The glass palace at Leipzig is perhaps the most significant glass structure since the Crystal Palace in 1850. (The Crystal Palace is still the more remakable in many respects.) In spite of its small format it is crammed with interesting detailed information regarding the project and many photos and sketches. Guess the concept was to have the smallest book in the world about the largest glass palace in the world. Still, I can't help but wish it was in a 12x12 format, like the Phaidon publications. The font is very small and dificult to read, and much of the detail in the drawings is lost. However, a must read for anyone interested in modern glass architecture. I'd love to build one in the U.S.!

Cabin Cooking: Good Food for the Great Outdoors (Williams-Sonoma Outdoors , Vol 2)
Published in Paperback by Time Life (May, 1999)
Average review score:

Another winner from Williams-SonomaI borrowed this book from a friend and kept going back every week to photocopy yet another recipe. I finally decided it would be easier if I just bought my own copy. The Greek rice salad always gets rave reviews at parties and the Sangria recipe is by far the best I have ever found.

Chapwoman's Guide to Shemanship and Pilot Handling
Published in Paperback by International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press (March, 1988)
Average review score:

Women AfloatThe guide addresses itself primarily to women who love men who love boats, and women who worry about no longer loving men because they love boats, and women who finally learn to adjust to a "menage'a trois." It also offers a definitive look at life on the open water as seen through the clear, far-sighted eyes of a woman. Experience this book -- its a hoot!
